ISO 26000
• It is important that a company standardise the way it defines, manages and measures its impact on the environment and society to ensure continuing effective operations and sustainability. ISO 26000 shows the way to do that.
What is ISO 26000?
• ISO 26000 is an ISO International Standard giving guidance on 'Social Responsibility '(aka 'Corporate Sustainability'). It is intended for use by organisations of all types, in both public and private sectors.
• Organisations and stakeholders are becoming increasingly aware of the need for socially and environmentally responsible behaviour. ISO 26000 is a guide to help organisations understand what social responsibility is and what they need to do to operate in a socially responsible way.
Why is ISO 26000 important?
• Sustainable business for companies means providing satisfactory services and products in a socially responsible manner as well as without jeopardising the environment
• Pressure to do so comes from customers, consumers, governments, associations and the public at large. At the same time, far-sighted organisational leaders recognise that lasting success must be built on credible business practices and the prevention of such activities as environmental degradation and labour exploitation along the supply chain.
• ISO 26000 distills a globally relevant understanding of what social responsibility is and what organizations need to do to operate in a socially responsible way.

• The environment
• Labour practices
• Human rights
• Fair operating practices
• Consumer issues
• Community involvement and development

• The guidance in ISO 26000 draws on best practice developed by existing public and private sector SR initiatives.
• It is consistent with and complements relevant declarations and conventions by the United Nations and its constituents.
How did the ISO 26000 initiative come about?
The standard was developed using a multi-stakeholder approach involving experts from more than 90 countries and 40 international or broadly-based regional organiaations involved in different aspects of social responsibility. These experts were from six different stakeholder groups: consumers; government; industry; labour; non-governmental organizations (NGOs); and service, support, research, academics and others.
