Key issues

One of the major achievements of the ISO 26000 guidance is to define what we mean by social responsibility / corporate sustainability.

Up until the standard was published, there existed any number of definitions which varied from country to country and industry to industry.

ISO 26000 says what social responsibility is and what it means through listing of the issues ('core subjects') that it encompasses. We have set out these issues below.

The list is for guidance only. The issues will be of concern in one way or another to all companies, but to most some issues will be more important and relevant to their business than others.

Lighting companies are no exception. Some issues will be more important than others to a company and its stakeholders. For the lighting industry, the most important issues are likely to be environmental followed closely by those issues that are associated with supply chains originating outside of the UK/EU.

The core activity of most lighting companies is the design and manufacture of lighting products. The activities involved in lighting manufacturing and use will involve many of the subjects described in ISO 26000 - so we have listed 'product development' as an 'issue ' in its own right, to act as a catalyst for integrating those issues.
